Title of Work: Crime and Punishment Author’s Name: Fyodor Dostoevsky Date of Publication: 1866 Genre: Philosophical fiction, Psychological novel, Crime Fiction Characteristics of the genre the work does/doesn’t meet: The characteristics of the genre the work does meet is provide the reader thought provoking questions over their morals of what is considered a crime and what punishment should be made by delving into the mind of a criminal tormented by the guilt of a murder which presented psychological aspects, and displaying a situation that involves a criminal with motive and events that led to his imprisonment. Setting: Time + Place + Atmosphere (mood or tone): The setting of the story takes place during the 1860s in St. Petersburg, Russia for the majority of the book where there is poverty everywhere with a grim aspects of a place where no one is safe, including drunkards, molesters, thieves, etc. The conclusion of the book takes place in Siberia, Russia where there is less corruption and well suited for people who seek atonement for their crimes, such as the prisoners.
